Listed below are a few weight loss questions from pregnant women from around the world:

Hi Michelle,

My name is Dianne, and I am 26 weeks pregnant with my second baby. My question is not related to myself but to a client of mine. I teach fitness classes and one of my participants mentioned that during the abdominal element in my class that she experienced a burning sensation across her caesarean section scar.

She had only started recently exercising this area since the birth of her child a year ago. I would like to advise her with time this sensation will go, but, will it? Is it the scared muscle tissue and skin causing the irritation?

I hope you can help answer this query!!

Kind regards

Dianne
Hi Michelle,

I am 25 weeks pregnant and have already gained 15 pounds. My weight before this pregnancy was on the high end of average. Have I gained too much so far? If so is it too late to try to cut back? I would like to gain no more than 30 pounds. I gained 50+ with my first pregnancy and I don't want to repeat that. Thanks!

Hi Michelle,

Im 14 weeks pregnant, 5'6 and about 12 stone. I've put over a stone on since my pregnancy. Now I want to loose a bit, will it be safe for me to start and eat low fat meals and no fatty meals? Please help me on this weight loss issue.

Jill
Hi Michelle,

Quick question, I am over weight, I am at 250 and 6 feet tall. How much should I gain?

Thanks,

Tammy Perry
Hi Michelle,

I was just wondering after a girl has her child how much pounds get taken off of the weight that she gained during pregnancy (without working out afterwards)?

Hi Michelle,

I am worried that I gained too much weight. I read your newsletter but I am still a bit worried. Before my pregnancy I weighed 124 pounds. I am 1.69 meters (5'9'). I am now in my 7th month of pregnancy and I weigh 148 pounds. Am I gaining too much weight?

Thank you
Annelize Potgieter
Dear Michelle,

I am severely overweight (5'2" and 235lbs.) and now pregnant with #2. I am at the same weight I was when I got pregnant with #1, and that pregnancy was pretty healthy. I had quite a bit of swelling in the legs and ankles towards the end and slightly elevated blood pressure. But all around a healthy pregnancy. I ended up having to be induced and then after a very long day, the baby was too big and had to be delivered by emergency C-section. My recovery was slow and I feel if I had been in better shape it would have helped a lot... which brings me to my question. I know I should have gotten in better shape before I got pregnant but I can't go back. So how do I plan a healthy pregnancy exercise routine when I didn't have one before?

Thanks for your help,

Amy
Michelle,

How Much Weight Should I Gain? How much weight can one put on during pregnancy without having any extra pounds after pregnancy?

I'm 4 months pregnant now (I'm 6"1 and 132 pounds - I've gained 4 pounds at the moment) and I am very anxious so I feel I must be very careful (if not I get horribly depressed!!).

Thanks for your help,

Stephanie
Hello Michelle!!!!!

Thank you for your answer.

I'm now in my week number 16. When I began my pregnancy my weigh was 105.6 pounds, and now my weigh is 110 pounds. I'm not sure if it is normal or if it is going fast.... could you tell me? I want to know how much time do you recomend for exercise every day.... I go walking 5 days a week for 30 minutes every day. Do you think it is ok?..... I'm happy and I think I'm taking this pregnancy as a normal condition.... I don't speak english so well, sorry for my mistakes.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
Martha Lotero
Hi Michelle,

How Much Weight Can I Lose?

I had just started a three month fitness program when I found out I was pregnant (I am about 4wks now). I had already lost 8 lbs and would like to continue for 2 more months and lose another 10lbs. My doctor said that for the first 3 months there is no reason to be putting on weight and nothing wrong with losing a bit. Do you
agree?

Have any of your subscribers successfully lost weight during the first trimester?

Regards,
Mandy
Michelle's Response

Everyday I get hundreds of emails with questions about pregnancy. And I'm sure it's no surprise to you that one of the BIGGEST topics is Weight Gain!

I know it's hard not to keep counting the pounds - especially when you're constantly being weighed at the doctor's office and sized up by EVERYONE around you (i.e. your tummy's grown a lot, you look small, you look big, etc. etc.)!

But there is a way through, and I CAN show you how. Listed below for Weight Gain Fear .com I answer 2 questions on weight gain (some women think
they have gained too much weight and others want to lose weight).

Question 1: How Much Weight Should I Gain?

My Opinion:

First thing you need to remember is that every pregnancy is different! Some women gain TONS (50+ pounds), while others gain very little (15 pounds). I personally gained 43 pounds (Yep! You read that right!).

So, really, how much weight should YOU gain during your pregnancy? The "medical" answer actually lies in your pre-pregnancy body weight. How much weight you should gain depends on whether you were underweight, average weight or overweight before you were pregnant. For example, (according to the charts) at 6'1" and 132 pounds you are classified as underweight. This means a healthy weight gain for you would be between 28 to 45 pounds.

Sound like a LOT? It is, BUT there are a couple of things you have to remember.

Firstly, not ALL of your weight gain is FAT! Some of that weight gain is: baby (6-8 lbs), placenta (1.5 lbs), amniotic fluid (2 lbs), uterine enlargement (2 lbs), maternal blood volume (3-4 lbs), maternal breast tissue (1-2 lb), maternal body fluid (4 lbs) and maternal fat stores (roughly 7 lbs).

Secondly, weight gain is HEALTHY; it means your baby is growing nicely. If you're active, eating healthy and not taking your pregnancy for granted (a lot of people use pregnancy as a ticket to eat everything and anything that they want by binging on chocolate, ice cream, and deserts), your weight gain during pregnancy and your weight loss afterwards will NOT be an issue.

Your body is resilient! It will bounce back if you treat it well (of course you can allow yourself the occasional indulgence and NOT feel guilty!).

Most importantly though - try not to get too hung up on the weight gain charts. Use the numbers as GUIDELINES only and try not to weigh yourself too often - in fact, I recommend only weighing-in at the doctor's office.

Stephanie was worried about gaining too much weight; but Mandy (below) wants to lose weight!

Question 2: How Much Weight Can I Lose?

My Opinion:

That is great that you lost 8 pounds BEFORE you found out you were pregnant, but now is not the time to be trying to lose more weight (intentionally!). Rather, it's time to focus on keeping active, continuing your exercise, eating well, getting adequate rest and lots and lots of self care (now that's a good excuse to treat yourself!).

I really CAN'T agree with losing an additional 10 pounds during your first trimester (especially for aesthetic reasons). So many of us are SO nervous about gaining TOO much weight during pregnancy that we lose touch with the beauty of nature.

You must remember (and trust!) that your weight WILL come off after you deliver your baby. And that you CAN get your pre-pregnancy body back, especially if you are an active person (and that's easy to take care of - I have lots of tips for helping women stay active!).

Pregnancy is the time to MAINTAIN your existing fitness level, so you're in a great position because you're in such good shape.

To Sum Up:

Weight gain during pregnancy is a hard thing to get your head around and we ALL have our moments of 'panic' - but rather than letting those moments consume your thoughts - allow them to take up 5% of your energy and use the other 95% to work on feeling
beautiful and sexy!

Your pregnancy journey is ONLY 40 weeks - don't forget to enjoy the ride!
